The set revealed by Atari comes with 10 games, all of which are newly manufactured collectible cartridges for rare and never-released Atari titles. The titles will work on the Atari 2600, which doesn’t come with the set. The 10 games in the set areAdventure,Asteroids,Centipede,Crystal Castles,Gravitar,Haunted House,Missile Command,Super Breakout,Warlords, and Yars' Revenge. The set costs a massive $999.99 to purchase, although it is limited worldwide to only 100 units, meaning it’ll be extremely rare in the future. The lucky few who did manage to get their hands on the set are facing quite a wait for the Atari set, with it not arriving for three-to-four months from now. This set isn’t the only way the company is celebrating its 50th anniversary.Atari has also releasedAtari 50: The Anniversary Celebration, a collection of 90 retro titles to give fans that hit of Atari nostalgia.
Unfortunately, players who want to get their hands on these will have to try and purchase one pre-owned, but due to the limited availability, it won’t come cheap. The set has already sold out due to low supply and high demand. With the already lofty price tag, expect the second-hand market on this set to be extremely pricey. Atari fans are no strangers to high price tags for older games, with the increasing rarity driving up costs for retro titles. Two years ago,Goodwill even auctioned off a $10,000 Atari game, but some titles can sell for even more.
The future is unclear for Atari. While it stopped creating home consoles long ago, the company remains in business. Nowadays,Atari is in the business of selling its own NFTs, as well as having its own cryptocurrency. For some fans, this will be a great thing for Atari to pursue, but no doubt there are also many that this direction will put off. However, Atari will almost certainly continue to cash in on the nostalgia of its older consoles, as the instant sell-out of this set shows demand is very much still there.
