Before 2018’sSolo: A Star Wars Story, it seemed like everyStar Warsmovie would be a box office success, but nowSolomay need video games to bolster its reputation. The franchise is one of the biggest in the world and each one has been a huge commercial success. However, the release ofSoloshowed that even a franchise as large asStar Warscan struggle at the box office. Instead of making a billion dollars like its predecessorThe Last Jedi, Solowent on to only gross $392 million worldwide. This caused Disney to drastically change itsStar Warsplans, and any hope of a continuation of the story has so far been dashed.
A lot of factors led to the failure ofSolo: A Star Wars Story, and it is very hard to pinpoint what exactly went wrong. It is most likely not due to the quality, as it was reviewed pretty well. The story followed a younger Han Solo before the events ofA New Hope, and it was actually a pretty fun adventure in the galaxy far, far away. The story even ended with a hint at what was to come, but as of now it seems there are no plans to follow that sequel tease. If Disney does not continue the lingering plot threads ofSoloin a film or TV show, then it should let the video game industry close out that chapter of theStar Warsstory.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is Waiting for a Follow-up
Solo: A Star Wars Storytold the story of a young Han Solo before he found himself in the Mos Eisley CantinaduringA New Hope. Viewers got to see when he met Chewbacca and Lando, and they saw him fly the Millennium Falcon for the first time. It also told a new type of story in theStar Warsgalaxy disconnected from the Force and its users. This was simply a story about a man who wanted to make money in the galaxy, and he got pulled into a conflict that was bigger than he was. It was both familiar and new.
A New Hopetechnically serves as a sequel of sorts toSolo, but the movie set up brand-new events that fans have not been able to see play out. At the end ofSolo, the character of Qi’ra contacted a mysterious figure after she and Han defeated the crimelord Dryden Vos. This mysterious character was revealed to beDarth Maul, who was last seen in live-action inThe Phantom Menace, andwas later healed in the animatedStar Wars: The Clone Wars. This set up a brand-new story for Maul between his meddling duringThe Clone Warsand before his death inRebels.

The end ofSoloalluded to future events that would see Qi’ra and Maul working closely together. Viewers have no idea just what the two characters would be working on or what it would mean for the greater galaxy, and right now it seems like they will never know. Disney has seemingly axed any futureA Star Wars Storymovies and has committed to releasing Disney Plus shows instead. IftheLandoseriesever sees the light of day then it may continue these events, but right now there is no indication thatSolowill receive any type of follow-up. Instead,Star Warsfans are just left wondering what happens next.

A Video Game Could Close Out the Story
While Disney has made no indication that it plans to continue the story, the video game industry would be a great place to do that.Star Warsgameshave always filled in gaps in the lore and explored different parts of the galaxy that the films have not, and theSolostory seemingly falls into that category. The characters and events that would come after could make for a great video game, and it would finally give fans the closure that they want.
Right now, it seems likeStar Warsgames tend to fall into two different categories. The games are eitherfirst-person shooters likeStar Wars Battlefrontwhich give players a closer look at the actual wars ofStar Wars, or they are action-adventure games or RPGs that follow the Jedi or Sith. There does not seem to be huge deviations from those two categories, and the future ofStar Warsgames also seem to be tied to those too, Respawn is working on another Jedi focused game and an FPS game, and there are a bunch ofStar Warsgames that have yet to be revealed. If the games follow the current trend, then they too will focus on the Force or the actual wars, but aSolosequel game could do something different.
One of the things that a lot ofStar Warsfans call for is an exploration of the criminal underworld of the galaxy.Star Wars 1313looked to be just that, but it was canceled once Disney closed down LucasArts. As of now, there seems to be no game coming out that will explore that part of the galaxy or serve as a spiritual successor to1313. TheSolosequel game could fulfill both wants while closing out the lingering threads of the movie, and it could be a pretty great time.
Sologave viewers a hint of the criminal underworld ofStar Wars, and the sequel game would have to do the same thing as it follows Qi’ra and Maul working together to build something out of the criminal syndicates. This would most likely spawn a game exploring this underworld in a high stakes adventure that would shape the galaxy. Players could be engrossed in this part of the canon, and experience a story unrelated to the Force andthe greater Skywalker story.
If aSolosequel ticks all these boxes, then it could be thegame thatStar Warsfans have wanted, and a great addition to the franchise. It could close out this chapter ofStar Warswhile also giving players that criminal underworld that they have been clamoring for. If Disney has no plans to follow up onSolo, then the video game industry deserves a shot at exploring this part of the story.
